Leeds United striker situation prompts Mateo Joseph exit push amid Real Betis interest
Daniel Farke currently has two striker options at his disposal this summer, but it has already been confirmed that Leeds United will be bringing in a new centre-forward.
That development is likely to cast further doubt over Mateo Joseph’s future at Elland Road.
The 21-year-old found it difficult to secure regular game time last season, managing just 11 starts in the Championship.
While he contributed when given the opportunity, it wasn’t enough to cement a spot in Farke’s plans.
The manager himself admitted Joseph failed to grasp the chances handed to him, and that has inevitably led the young forward to explore a move elsewhere.
One club leading the race for his signature is Real Betis, who have held long-standing interest in the Leeds academy product.
Betis pushing for deal but face salary hurdle
Betis previously saw a £10 million offer for Joseph turned down, but the Spanish side remain keen and have re-entered talks with Leeds.
Their persistence has likely been spurred by Joseph’s impressive form for Spain’s U21 team at the recent UEFA U21 EURO tournament, where he stood out alongside other top young talents.
The player is open to a return to Spain, and Betis appears to be his preferred destination. However, Leeds are reportedly driving a hard bargain.
The club rejected a £6.9m offer and are now believed to be holding out for at least £8.5m—despite having previously turned down a larger £10m bid in the winter.
According to El Desmarque, though, Leeds are not the obstacle this time. Instead, Betis themselves are facing internal roadblocks, particularly regarding striker Borja Iglesias.
The former Espanyol forward, signed for £24m in 2019, remains on the books with a hefty salary, which is preventing Betis from completing the Joseph deal for now.
Betis see Joseph as a direct replacement for Iglesias, and while talks remain ongoing, it’s said this could be their final push to get the deal over the line.
Leeds set for difficult but necessary decision
Given the current situation, it would be surprising if Joseph remained at Leeds beyond this summer.
With another striker set to arrive, he could drop even further down the pecking order, effectively making his departure inevitable.
From a financial standpoint, selling Joseph would also aid Leeds in their PSR (Profit and Sustainability Rules) compliance, especially with an additional £42.5m becoming available soon.
While the club may come to regret losing a talented young player, this decision could be necessary for Leeds to move forward and ensure a strong, strategic transfer window under 49ers Enterprises’ guidance.
