Everton make move to sign striker praised by Lineker, with ‘favourites’ for the deal identified – report
Everton have inquired about Evan Ferguson’s availability from Brighton ahead of the 3 February transfer deadline, reports Graeme Bailey.
According to a report from TBR Football on 31 January, West Ham have emerged as the “firm favourites” to sign Republic of Ireland international Evan Ferguson from Brighton.
Chelsea have also expressed interest, while Everton have made enquiries about the highly rated 20-year-old.
However, if David Moyes wants to secure Ferguson, West Ham may need to cancel Jack Harrison’s temporary deal to free up a loan slot.
Ferguson has been compared to Erling Haaland, with Gary Lineker praising his movement, finishing, and physicality on The Rest Is Football podcast in September 2023.
Lineker said: “He’s got it all, hasn’t he? You never know completely with young players, but his movement, his finishing… he’s got a tiny hint of Haaland.
He’s a big lad, strong, quick, and a good finisher who looks unfazed by everything.”
Everton’s Pursuit of Ferguson
Everton are also in urgent need of a striker before the transfer window closes.
Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s injury has left Beto as the only fit senior forward, with both Armando Broja and Youssef Chermiti also sidelined.
Given their lack of attacking depth, Everton’s hierarchy must act quickly to bring in reinforcements.
A move for Ferguson, with the promise of regular first-team minutes, could be beneficial for both parties.
The Irish striker has struggled for game time under Fabian Hurzeler and has been linked with several clubs across the Premier League and Europe during the winter window.
If Everton’s owners, the Friedkin Group, want to make a statement and back Moyes, securing Ferguson would be a significant move.
