OPINION: “Leeds Must Prevent Rangers from Signing ‘Irreplaceable’ Player Daniel Farke Coveted; 49ers Offered £4M Last Summer “

Last summer, Leeds United undertook significant changes in their midfield, bringing in three new players during Daniel Farke’s first transfer window. Despite these efforts, one targeted player, Kenny McLean, resisted the allure of Elland Road.

Following their relegation, Leeds saw the departures of Marc Roca, Tyler Adams, Adam Forshaw, and Weston McKennie for various reasons, necessitating the arrival of fresh talent like Glen Kamara from Rangers. Additionally, Ilia Gruev was signed from Werder Bremen, and although Ethan Ampadu has recently excelled as a center-back, he was initially brought in as a midfielder in 2023.

Promoting Archie Gray from the academy to the senior team was another move, but Leeds had also attempted to secure McLean, a player Farke once described as “irreplaceable.”

As the new season approaches, Leeds finds itself still in need of midfield reinforcements. Despite interest in Gray and Gruev, who have drawn attention this summer, Leeds requires additional midfield options. Gray has been playing in defense alongside Ampadu, leaving Leeds with only Gruev and Kamara in the midfield for much of the latter half of the season. Revisiting a move for the 33-year-old McLean could provide the needed depth.

Though McLean is in the latter stages of his career, he brings valuable experience that Leeds currently lacks. Norwich’s Player of the Season, McLean, offers the kind of veteran presence that Farke has noted is missing from the squad, akin to the influence of a player like Sam Morsy.

Rangers have expressed interest in signing the Scotland international, but Leeds must act quickly. McLean had previously rejected a £4 million bid from Leeds to remain loyal to Norwich, where he had worked with Farke. However, after another frustrating season at Norwich, culminating in a 4-0 defeat by Leeds in the Championship play-offs, McLean might be reconsidering his future.

The Daily Record reports that Rangers are eager to bring McLean back to Scotland. If McLean decides to leave Norwich, Leeds must be prepared to compete for his signature. The necessity of adding another experienced midfielder, Farke’s awareness of the team’s lack of seasoned players with extensive Championship experience like Morsy or McLean, and Leeds’ previous interest in him all make a compelling case for pursuing McLean once again.

In summary, Leeds should re-enter the market to sign McLean from Norwich, aiming to outmaneuver Rangers for his acquisition. This move could address the critical need for experience and depth in Leeds’ midfield.
