Newcastle United have no plans to dismiss Eddie Howe despite Sunday’s damaging 1-0 derby loss to Sunderland, according to journalist Graeme Bailey.
The defeat at the Stadium of Light, settled by a Nick Woltemade own goal, piled further frustration onto what has been a difficult opening half of the campaign for the Magpies.
However, the club’s hierarchy are not expected to make any immediate judgement on Howe’s future, even with Newcastle managing just six wins from their opening 16 Premier League fixtures.
Away form has been a major concern this season, with Newcastle winning only once on the road so far.
That solitary success came at Everton last month, offering a small sign of progress after a run of poor performances away from St James’ Park.
Howe himself described the Sunderland defeat as “horrible”, bringing an end to a five-game unbeaten run in all competitions.
Despite the setback, Newcastle currently sit 12th in the Premier League table, just six points off the top four, and the club believe their situation is far from irretrievable.
Howe Still Backed by the Board
Bailey reports that Newcastle’s leadership, including recently appointed sporting director Ross Wilson, remain fully supportive of Howe and have no intention of making a managerial change.
Internally, the view is that the 48-year-old remains the right man to lead the project and steer the team back on track.
While improvements are expected, particularly in away matches, there is a belief that performances have shown enough promise to suggest results will follow.
The club are also encouraged by the impact of new arrivals Malick Thiaw and Woltemade, both of whom have made strong early impressions.
As a result, Newcastle are unlikely to be overly busy when the January transfer window opens.
Although they would consider a deal if a clear opportunity presents itself, there is confidence that the current squad has the quality needed to improve results heading into 2026.
In Europe, things remain finely balanced. With three wins from their last six Champions League games, Newcastle are just two points outside the top eight and remain firmly in the mix to progress.
Livramento Future Uncertain
Off the pitch, Newcastle are monitoring Tino Livramento’s situation closely after the right-back delayed discussions over a new contract.
The 23-year-old has asked to revisit talks at the end of the season, with Manchester City among the clubs credited with an interest.
Livramento, who joined from Southampton in 2023 and is contracted until June 2028, has featured in every minute of Newcastle’s last five league games following a spell out injured, underlining his growing importance to Howe’s side.
