Leeds United Contract Situation May Present Opportunity for Sheffield United Targeted by Marcelo Bielsa
Sources suggest Sheffield United may take advantage of Leeds United's uncertainty to bring a versatile 24-year-old to Bramall Lane.

Sheffield United may seek to capitalize on uncertainty surrounding Jamie Shackleton’s future at Leeds United by pursuing him to join Bramall Lane this summer. The versatile 24-year-old, whose contract with his boyhood club is expiring, has yet to commit to the offer from Daniel Farke’s side.
Shackleton, who emerged from Leeds’ academy, has amassed nearly 100 appearances for the club, showcasing his flexibility in roles such as right-back and various midfield positions. He is one of two defenders whose contracts expire this summer, alongside skipper Liam Cooper, with Leeds set to commence pre-season training next week.
While Sheffield United currently have Jayden Bogle and young talent Sam Curtis as right-back options, Shackleton’s adaptability makes him an appealing prospect for the Blades. This interest comes at a time when Sheffield United recently faced contract renegotiations, notably with Ben Osborn, who can play multiple roles.
Several sources have indicated that Shackleton is under Sheffield United’s consideration, although the club’s transfer plans are complicated by ongoing negotiations related to a potential takeover from a US-based entity.
During his time under former Leeds manager Marcelo Bielsa, Shackleton drew praise for his maturity and versatility, particularly when filling in at right-back during injury crises. Bielsa once described him as having a maturity beyond his years, noting his ability to surprise opponents with explosive movements and well-timed attacking instincts.
Despite a season marked by injuries that limited his appearances to just 15 games last season, Shackleton’s age suggests that Sheffield United could potentially secure his services without compensation. According to Bosman regulations, clubs signing players under 24 must compensate the former club unless a reasonable contract offer was made and rejected. Shackleton, who turns 25 in October, falls into this category.
