Leicester City manager Marti Cifuentes has made it clear that he does not want a culture of sore losers at the club and has cautioned winger Abdul Fatawu about airing frustrations publicly.

Following City’s 2-1 defeat to Hull City, Fatawu took to social media to complain about a lack of protection from referees.

The Ghanaian posted photos showing a strong challenge from Hull defender Akin Famewo that left a minor cut on his foot, adding: “We can’t take a chance to get unnecessary injuries. This ref needs to take care of us so we can bring our best.”

However, Cifuentes has since addressed the matter with the 20-year-old winger, explaining that it was the wrong time to post such comments.

With Leicester struggling for form — managing just one win in their last seven games — the Spaniard believes frustrations should be channelled into performances on the pitch rather than social media.

“I think it was probably just a young player expressing frustration,” Cifuentes said. “Of course, referees have the responsibility to protect players and apply the rules properly.

As fans, we all want to see the best players on the pitch, but I told Abdul that the timing was not right. If we’d won 3-0, perhaps it would have been different, but after a defeat, it gives the wrong impression.”

Cifuentes explained that such reactions risk portraying the team as sore losers. “The disappointment needs to be shown in the next game, not online.

That’s the culture I want to build — one where players respond with action, not complaints,” he said. “Abdul understands that now and regrets the timing.”

Fatawu’s sensitivity on the matter may stem from his previous long-term injury. The winger only recently returned to full fitness after recovering from a torn ACL.

Cifuentes, however, praised Fatawu’s honesty and passion. “What everyone at the club loves about Abdul is his energy, openness, and sincerity,” he added.

“Coming back from a serious injury, it’s natural for him to feel protective of himself. Referees have a difficult job, but it’s still fair to expect them to protect players — not just Abdul, but everyone — from dangerous tackles.”
