Leicester City’s Deadline Day Transfer Update: Odsonne Edouard Deal Under Review

Leicester City approached last summer’s transfer deadline day with flexibility, aiming to seize any last-minute opportunities.

They maintain a similar stance this time but with greater caution.

One key reason is the financial constraints imposed by Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) following their summer business. This leaves limited room in their budget.

Additionally, they are wary of repeating last summer’s deadline-day signing of Odsonne Edouard, who has struggled to make an impact.

Transfers always carry an element of risk, but City must ensure that any incoming player genuinely strengthens the starting eleven.

If a signing won’t significantly improve the squad, it isn’t worth further straining their PSR situation.

In such a case, Ruud van Nistelrooy would be better off sticking with his current group.

The recent arrival of Woyo Coulibaly means that, once Wilfred Ndidi returns—potentially as soon as Friday—City will have at least two fit players for every position.

Depth is no longer a concern. Instead, they need quality additions who can upgrade the first team.

A winger remains a priority, as Abdul Fatawu’s departure has left a gap in terms of pace and one-on-one ability—qualities that van Nistelrooy described as a “massive loss.”

A center-back is also under consideration, given the team’s ongoing defensive struggles.

As always, City will stay vigilant on deadline day, monitoring developments at other clubs to see if a suitable and affordable player becomes available.

However, as things stand, it appears unlikely they will secure any signings. A single arrival would be surprising, while multiple new players would be even more unexpected.

If there are no new signings, there will likely be no senior departures either. Van Nistelrooy dismissed speculation about left-back Luke Thomas joining Hoffenheim, making it clear he won’t leave unless a replacement arrives.

The same applies to Caleb Okoli, who has been linked with a return to Italy.

It also seems Edouard will remain at Leicester. Unless Crystal Palace can secure a buyer, the only way his loan spell at City ends is if the club pays to terminate the deal.

Due to financial implications, that would only happen if Leicester had another Premier League loan target in mind, as they can only have two loan players from English top-flight clubs at a time.

In that case, a loan from a foreign club would be more likely.

One confirmed move on deadline day will be Will Alves’ loan switch to Cardiff City in the Championship.

Van Nistelrooy has approved the deal, and unless any last-minute complications arise, the teenager should complete his move to the Bluebirds.

Other young players from the club’s development squad could also head out on loan to EFL clubs before the window closes.
