Bates Rejoins in Amber, Curran Signs Up

Cheshunt FC has announced the signing of defender Billy Bates from West Ham United, following a successful loan spell during the latter half of last season.

Billy began his youth football career with Leyton Orient and Norwich City before joining West Ham in the autumn of 2020. Despite enduring serious injuries, including an ACL injury that sidelined him for the entire 2021-22 season, Billy became a key player for the Hammers’ Under 18 and Under 21 teams, eventually signing his first professional contract with the club in May of last year.

Before his time with Orient, Billy played for Cheshunt at the youth level. He played a crucial role in their survival efforts after returning to the club in January, making eighteen appearances.

Joining Billy at Cheshunt is another defender, Taylor Curran. Taylor progressed through the ranks at Southend United and had a loan spell at Braintree Town before signing with Swindon Town. After a challenging period at Swindon, he moved to Maidstone United and then joined Cheshunt for the first time via a loan spell at Haringey Borough, where he made four appearances.

Billy initially signed for Cheshunt FC in January from West Ham, following a period sidelined by knee injuries. He made 18 appearances for the Ambers without any injury recurrence, and he was thrilled to be back in action after such a long absence. Billy started his football journey with Cheshunt Youth before moving into the professional academy ranks, but it’s clear he still relishes wearing the Amber shirt and representing his hometown club.

For Cheshunt FC, Billy brings experience from Premier League coaching and matches at the Under 18 and Under 21 levels against some of the best players in the country. He serves as an inspiration for the club’s youth players, demonstrating that the journey from Cheshunt’s youth teams to the first team is achievable.
