Galatasaray Set to Make Late Bid for Newcastle's Kieran Trippier Ahead of Monday's Deadline
Newcastle United may still experience some deadline-day excitement.
Although the transfer window has been relatively quiet for the Magpies, there are now two potential moves that could materialize in the final hours.
Juventus has reached an agreement to sign Lloyd Kelly, with the 26-year-old set for a medical ahead of his £15 million transfer to the Italian club.
Meanwhile, another Newcastle defender could soon be on his way out.
Kieran Trippier is reportedly being targeted by Turkish side Galatasaray, with a move potentially taking shape in the next 48 hours.
Trippier had requested to leave Newcastle in the summer, but ultimately stayed on Tyneside.
It appears, however, that a transfer to Turkey is back on the table.
Eddie Howe, Newcastle’s manager, had previously warned fans that January would likely be quiet, but it seems he now faces some tough choices as the window closes.
In the summer, Howe insisted that Trippier remain at the club, a stance that the manager still holds.
The supporters also want to see the right-back stay.
Although Trippier has featured in 18 matches this season, he has played fewer than 750 minutes, often being overshadowed by Tino Livramento at right-back.
Despite his reduced playing time, Howe is reportedly keen for Trippier to remain at St James’ Park.
The Northern Echo reports that Howe is not eager to part ways with Trippier before the transfer deadline on Monday, but Newcastle is anticipating an offer from Galatasaray soon.
Howe has praised Trippier as “quality,” noting not only his footballing talent but also his leadership on and off the pitch.
Galatasaray’s interest in Trippier could lead to a potential offer. When Newcastle signed the right-back for £12 million in 2022, they made a solid investment, and they now have the opportunity to recoup some of that cost.
Journalist Ben Jacobs reveals that Galatasaray has yet to submit a formal bid but is reportedly willing to offer close to €5 million (£4.2 million).
If they fail to strike a deal in the coming days, Galatasaray plans to revisit the transfer in the summer.
A £4.2 million sale would provide Newcastle with much-needed funds to address their financial concerns, especially in light of the £15 million expected from Kelly’s transfer.
However, selling Trippier could leave Howe with fewer options at right-back, especially if Livramento faces any injuries or setbacks.
