Manchester United are expressing strong interest in signing West Ham midfielder Edson Alvarez.
According to Florian Plettenberg, the Red Devils are eyeing the Hammers’ midfielder, although no official offer has been made. The Sky Germany journalist wrote on X (22 June) that Erik ten Hag values the 26-year-old highly, prompting United to contact West Ham about his availability.
While West Ham are hesitant to part with the Mexico international, they do not consider him indispensable. They are demanding a fee between £50-£67 million for the defensive midfielder, who joined them last summer from Ajax. So far, no agreements or offers have been tabled for Alvarez, described as a “top player” by the club.
After selling Declan Rice to Arsenal, West Ham manager David Moyes faced pressure to strengthen the midfield, leading to the signing of Alvarez from Ajax. Last season, the midfielder made 42 appearances across all competitions, scoring two goals. He averaged 2.6 tackles and 1.6 interceptions per game in the Premier League, though his discipline has been a point of criticism.
Julen Lopetegui, West Ham’s manager, aims to make several squad changes, but acquiring a midfielder is not his top priority. Despite Alvarez’s long-term contract at the London Stadium, West Ham are under no pressure to sell him.
Manchester United may be seeking a dynamic defensive midfielder, and Alvarez fits the bill. However, there are doubts about whether United would be willing to pay over £50 million for the Mexican this summer.
In addition to Alvarez, West Ham have signed Brazilian forward Luis Guilherme and are linked with Wolves defender Max Kilman. Despite Wolves rejecting two bids, the Hammers remain determined to secure a deal for the 27-year-old centre-back.
