Leon Belcar, the 23-year-old midfielder, is fully aware of the reports linking him with a potential move to Rangers during the winter transfer window.
However, the Croatia Under-21 international appears to be in no rush to leave his boyhood club, NK Varaždin.
Belcar is more than just a player for NK Varaždin; he is a local talent who grew up near the stadium, worked his way through the youth ranks, and established himself as a key figure in the heart of the team’s midfield.
For Belcar, playing for his hometown club is a dream come true.
Despite Rangers’ interest, which would provide Belcar with an opportunity to showcase his skills on a larger stage, he has chosen to remain loyal to his current team.
This week, Belcar signed a contract extension with NK Varaždin, committing himself to the club until the summer of 2027.
Explaining his decision, Belcar, who has scored three goals in 17 Croatian top-flight appearances this season, emphasized his deep connection to the club and his desire to stay.
Speaking to NK Varaždin’s official website, he admitted it would take something extraordinary to convince him to leave the place he calls home.
“[Signing a new contract] was my first plan,” Belcar said. “While media reports about interest from big European clubs are flattering, I’m in no hurry.
I’m happy and content at Varaždin. This is where my heart is, where I feel at home, and where I want to achieve new victories.
“It’s a special feeling to be in your city, playing for your club, and surrounded by your people. I got my chance here and made the most of it.
It’s great to know the fans see and appreciate my efforts.”
Belcar also reflected on his journey, recalling a pivotal moment early in his career: “My best moment in the Varaždin jersey was scoring my first goal against Hajduk.
That was a turning point for me.
At the time, I wasn’t sure if I would succeed in football, and that goal gave me the confidence and opportunity to play more regularly.”
A lifelong admirer of Real Madrid legend Zinedine Zidane, Belcar models his game on his idol, focusing on dictating play and creating opportunities.
However, he acknowledges there is room for improvement, particularly in contributing more goals and assists.
“Personally, I feel fantastic,” he added. “I believe this team has the potential to achieve even more.
The second half of the season will be more challenging, but we’re ready for it.
We’ve already proven we can compete with anyone.
My goal is to increase my goal and assist tally, while the team aims to secure a spot in European competition.”
Belcar’s ambitions highlight his commitment to NK Varaždin and his desire to help the team reach new heights.
While Belcar remains focused on his current club, Rangers are reportedly monitoring other talents in Croatia as well.
NK Osijek’s Marko Soldo, a 21-year-old defender, has also caught the attention of the Scottish side.
Reports suggest that a bid of £2.5 million might be enough to bring Soldo to Glasgow, further fueling speculation about Rangers’ interest in strengthening their squad with Croatian talent.
For now, though, Leon Belcar’s loyalty to NK Varaždin stands firm, with the midfielder determined to continue his development and contribute to the success of his hometown club.
