Newcastle United’s Quiet January and Summer Ambitions

Newcastle United had a relatively uneventful January transfer window, marking the third consecutive period without any direct reinforcements to Eddie Howe’s starting XI.

Instead, the club’s leadership, including sporting director Paul Mitchell, focused on generating funds through player sales.

The departures of Miguel Almirón to Atlanta United and Lloyd Kelly to Juventus helped Newcastle bring in over £30 million in transfer fees, with Kelly’s loan set to become permanent in the summer.

A priority for Newcastle in January was securing a right winger, particularly after Almirón’s exit.

Despite making a £50 million deadline-day bid for Anthony Elanga last summer, they failed to land a marquee signing for the position.

The Magpies explored a move for Southampton winger Tyler Dibling in January, but the Saints, battling relegation, were unwilling to part with him.

Tottenham have also shown interest in the talented 18-year-old, but Newcastle remain determined to secure his signature after monitoring him for an extended period.

Newcastle are also keeping tabs on Crystal Palace midfielder Adam Wharton, a player Spurs have also expressed interest in, according to TeamTalk.

Newcastle have been tracking Wharton since 2023, when he was excelling at Blackburn Rovers. Since moving to Palace, he has impressed in the Premier League and even earned a call-up to England’s senior squad.

With Wharton under contract at Palace until 2029, securing his services this summer could prove challenging.

Additionally, Newcastle have maintained their interest in Palace defender Marc Guehi, adding further competition for players in high demand.

Champions League Ambitions Could Give Newcastle the Edge

Alongside Dibling and Wharton, both Newcastle and Tottenham are reportedly interested in signing Angel Gomes, who will become a free agent in the summer.

Eddie Howe and Paul Mitchell will have their work cut out to convince these players to choose Newcastle over Spurs, but one factor could work in their favor.

Newcastle are currently sixth in the Premier League and pushing for a Champions League return. Even if a top-four finish proves elusive, European qualification remains likely.

Meanwhile, Tottenham sit 14th in the table, making it unlikely they will offer European football to prospective signings.
