Signs are growing that the January transfer window is fast approaching, with fresh reports emerging of possible new arrivals at St James’ Park.
Earlier today, we covered Newcastle United’s reported interest in Club Brugge prospect Aleksandar Stankovic. Now, another promising midfielder has entered the picture — AZ Alkmaar’s Kees Smit.
According to The Mail’s Craig Hope, Newcastle are stepping up efforts to sign the 19-year-old Dutchman, who is attracting attention from some of Europe’s biggest clubs.
Known for his technique and creativity, Smit has drawn comparisons to former Manchester City playmaker Kevin De Bruyne and has also been watched by Barcelona, Real Madrid, Borussia Dortmund, and Bayern Munich.
Under contract until 2028, the youngster is reportedly valued at around £20 million. He has already made over 50 senior appearances for AZ, including a recent outing in the Europa Conference League against Crystal Palace.
New sporting director Ross Wilson is eager to bring in high-potential talents who can develop under Eddie Howe’s guidance, and Newcastle believe their offer of regular Premier League minutes could give them an edge over European rivals.
It remains unclear whether the Magpies will move in January or wait until the summer, but with Joe Willock’s role uncertain and Joelinton nearing his 30s, Howe could look to refresh his midfield options soon.
Dutch national team boss Ronald Koeman recently compared Smit to Spain’s Pedri, praising the youngster’s spatial awareness and calmness under pressure:
“He has the awareness to receive in tight spaces and move the ball forward. That’s something we value.
The resemblance to Pedri lies in his positioning and decision-making under pressure. Big clubs always monitor players with those traits.”
Crystal Palace are also monitoring Smit, who stands just over six feet tall and is now a regular for the Netherlands Under-21 side — further proof of his growing reputation across Europe.
