Joao Palhinha Confirms Tottenham Exit Following Loan Spell

Newcastle United could be presented with an ideal opportunity to strengthen their midfield this summer after Tottenham Hotspur opted not to make João Palhinha’s loan move from FC Bayern Munich permanent.
Despite producing a series of impressive performances during his spell in North London, Spurs chose not to trigger the £26 million purchase option included in the agreement.
The experienced Portugal international was one of the club’s standout performers, contributing several vital goals throughout the campaign.
His most memorable moment came on the final day of the season when he scored the decisive winner against Everton F.C., a result that ensured Tottenham retained their Premier League status.
Palhinha remains under contract with Bayern until 2028, but the Bundesliga champions are reportedly prepared to sanction his departure this summer for a relatively modest fee.
That situation could play perfectly into Newcastle’s hands as Eddie Howe prepares for significant changes in the middle of the pitch.
The Magpies are on the verge of losing Sandro Tonali, who has agreed a £100 million move to Tottenham, while Bruno Guimarães continues to attract serious interest from Premier League champions Arsenal.
Should both departures materialise, Newcastle will need experienced replacements capable of making an immediate impact.
Although Newcastle have never submitted an official bid for Palhinha, their admiration for the midfielder stretches back several years.
The club monitored him before his move to Fulham F.C. in 2022 and continued tracking his progress after he established himself as one of the Premier League’s most effective defensive midfielders.
His ability to shield the back line, dominate duels and contribute important goals makes him an attractive option for Howe’s side.
Alongside exciting young talent such as Johan Manzambi, who is currently in talks over a move, Palhinha could provide valuable leadership and top-level experience.
Following confirmation of his Tottenham exit, Palhinha shared an emotional farewell on Instagram, thanking supporters for their backing.
He wrote: “London gave me more than a professional career; it gave me two homes that I will always carry in my heart.” Newcastle will hope to offer him the next chapter of his career at St James’ Park.
