Leicester City linked with former Rangers and Leeds midfielder Glen Kamara, available for under £3m as he looks to leave Rennes
A potential January transfer for former Rangers and Leeds United midfielder Glen Kamara could prove intriguing for Leicester City, though it raises questions given the club’s already well-stocked midfield options.
The Finland international, currently at Rennes, has yet to feature this season and is reportedly eager to leave in the winter window.
According to FootMercato, Leicester are one of three clubs interested, alongside Nice and Championship rivals Ipswich Town.
The move would likely be inexpensive, with Kamara valued at around €3 million (£2.6 million), and his experience suggests he could still make an impact at Championship level.
Kamara impressed during his time at Rangers, playing a pivotal role in their domestic success, and was an influential figure for Leeds United two seasons ago when they came close to promotion.
However, his potential arrival would come amid questions over where he would fit into Martí Cifuentes’ evolving tactical setup.
In recent matches, Leicester have shifted to a system featuring one deep-lying midfielder — typically Harry Winks — supported by two more advanced number eights, Jordan James and Bobby De Cordova-Reid.
If this structure continues, Kamara could struggle for game time, as his natural role is as a sitting midfielder positioned in front of the defence.
Leicester already possess ample depth in that area. Boubakary Soumaré and Oliver Skipp are both capable backups for Winks, while Hamza Choudhury can also slot in there when not deployed at full-back.
Rising talent Louis Page adds further cover, capable of operating both as a deep midfielder and in a box-to-box role.
Given this depth, signing Kamara might be seen as an unnecessary addition — particularly since Cifuentes has expressed a desire to avoid an oversized squad.
Furthermore, with Kamara turning 30 this month, he is unlikely to be viewed as a long-term investment.
Leicester’s need for midfield reinforcements may only arise if they opt to cash in on Soumaré or Winks during the January window.
Both players’ contracts expire next summer, meaning this would be the club’s final opportunity to secure a transfer fee, with Soumaré already linked to Roma and Sevilla.
