Newcastle United have faced challenges adhering to the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) since the Saudi Public Investment Fund (PIF) completed its £305 million takeover in October 2021.

Under PSR guidelines, clubs are only allowed to incur losses of up to £105 million over a rolling three-year period.

Newcastle narrowly avoided breaching these rules for the 2023-24 season by selling Elliot Anderson to Nottingham Forest and Yankuba Minteh to Brighton just before the June 30 financial deadline.

These sales helped limit the club’s losses to £11 million for the year.

One major obstacle has been the £72 million loss recorded for the 2022-23 season, which significantly restricted their transfer spending in recent years.

However, this figure will no longer count towards their PSR calculations from July, providing a crucial boost to their financial flexibility in the transfer market.

In addition, the Magpies posted a record-high revenue for 2023-24, with turnover rising from £250 million to £320 million.

This increase was driven largely by their participation in the Champions League and a commercial revenue surge—from £47 million to £86 million.

With a fifth-place finish in the league, Newcastle are set for another Champions League campaign, and financial expert Stefan Borson has projected the club could earn as much as £100 million from the competition.

Meanwhile, Newcastle are actively pursuing reinforcements, particularly in attack. Nottingham Forest winger Anthony Elanga has emerged as a top target for Eddie Howe.

As reported by Football Insider on June 15, Forest have told Newcastle they must increase their bid to secure the Sweden international.

A fee of at least £50 million will now be required to sign the 23-year-old, who scored six goals and provided 11 assists while playing in every Premier League match during the 2024-25season.
