Fabrizio Romano Addresses Leicester City’s January Links to Manchester United Defender

Leicester City are in danger of relegation back to the Championship this season, making the upcoming winter transfer window crucial for their survival hopes.

Defensive reinforcements are clearly a priority, as the Foxes have conceded 40 goals in just 18 matches, a joint-league high.

A number of players have been linked with Leicester in recent weeks as potential options for manager Ruud van Nistelrooy.

One such name is Chancel Mbemba, whose contract expires in June, making him a potential cut-price signing.

Additionally, Leicester are reportedly interested in Valentin Gomez, who could be available for a fee in the region of £8m-£10m.

The Foxes may also consider welcoming back a former star.

Reports suggest a possible return for Harry Maguire in 2025, though the likelihood of this move remains uncertain.

Interestingly, Maguire is not the only Manchester United player to be linked with Leicester recently.

Fabrizio Romano on Leicester City’s Interest in Victor Lindelof

Victor Lindelof has struggled for playing time at Manchester United during the 2024/25 season, particularly in the Premier League.

The Swedish defender has managed just 59 minutes of top-flight action and, with his contract expiring in 2025, appears to have a limited future at Old Trafford.

Writing for Give Me Sport, Fabrizio Romano discussed Leicester’s reported interest in Lindelof.

While Manchester United are reportedly open to proposals for him in January, a move to Leicester seems unlikely.

Romano wrote:

“Victor Lindelof is expected to leave the Red Devils in 2025 when his contract expires in June.

Man United will listen to offers in January, but with free agency just a few months away, the right opportunity would need to arise.

Otherwise, Lindelof may wait until summer to find his ideal club without involving Manchester United.

“Although there have been links between Leicester City and Lindelof due to Ruud van Nistelrooy’s appreciation, sources indicate there are no ongoing talks.

The Swedish defender will likely explore other options when the time comes to depart Old Trafford.”

Other Defenders Linked to Leicester City

While a move for Lindelof appears unlikely, Leicester have been linked with other defensive reinforcements.

One such player is Ben Godfrey, who could bring valuable Premier League experience to the club.

Leicester are also reportedly competing with Manchester City for RC Lens defender Abdukodir Khusanov.

The highly-rated player is expected to cost around £20m-£30m, should he move.

Both Godfrey and Khusanov would be solid additions to Leicester’s squad.

However, for now, Van Nistelrooy must work with his current defensive options, which have underperformed throughout the season.

The pressure is on Leicester to act decisively during the winter window to strengthen their squad and boost their chances of avoiding the drop.
