West Ham should closely monitor Liverpool’s 25-year-old goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher, who is currently filling in for the injured Alisson Becker.

With Alphonse Areola underperforming for the Hammers this season, Julen Lopetegui must consider an upgrade, and Kelleher could be the perfect fit.

Areola has faced heavy criticism for his performances, including harsh remarks from club legend Tony Cottee.

Despite being a solid shot-stopper—making 138 saves, 11 punches, 20 high claims, four catches, four sweeper clearances, and saving two penalties in 31 Premier League games last season—Areola lacks the well-rounded skills needed in modern football.

Goalkeepers today must excel not only in shot-stopping but also in commanding their area, playing out from the back, and communicating effectively with their defense.

Unfortunately, top-class goalkeepers who surpass Areola’s abilities are scarce, especially ones who may be available in the January transfer window.

However, Kelleher stands out as someone West Ham should pursue.

West Ham Must Break the Bank to Sign Kelleher

Kelleher has consistently impressed when called upon to deputize for Alisson at Liverpool.

He has proven to be more than capable of stepping up, and it seems clear that he is too talented to remain a backup goalkeeper for much longer.

In an interview with The Times, Kelleher acknowledged his situation at Anfield, stating, “I spoke with the manager about the situation, but it was never going to change because the fact is that I am up against Alisson and he’s one of the best in the world.

So he’s always going to be No. 1 and he’s always going to play.”

West Ham should capitalize on Kelleher’s desire for more first-team opportunities. A bid in January could force both Liverpool and Kelleher to reconsider his future.

At West Ham, he would represent a significant upgrade on Areola.

Kelleher is a commanding presence in the penalty area, excellent at claiming crosses, and consistently communicates with his defenders.

He is also confident with the ball at his feet and capable of making match-winning saves.

According to The Times, Liverpool would consider offers for Kelleher in excess of £20 million. West Ham should test their resolve this winter.

If Lopetegui is serious about elevating the team, replacing Areola with Kelleher would be a straightforward and impactful decision.
