Willie Collum urged to address Scottish referees after SFA overturns Mohamed Diomande's red card
Diomande, 23, received a straight red card during Rangers’ 3-1 victory over Dundee United on Sunday, 26 January, following an incident involving defender Kevin Holt.
Referee Nick Walsh awarded Rangers a free-kick just outside the box but deemed Diomande’s actions towards Holt as aggressive, resulting in the dismissal.
Although Diomande raised his arms during the altercation, it appeared more as a reaction to being pushed by Holt than an intentional act of aggression.
Despite being advised by VAR to review the incident on the pitch-side monitor, Walsh upheld his initial decision.
The SFA has since overturned Diomande’s suspension after a fast-track tribunal hearing on Tuesday, 28 January.
His ban for violent conduct has been removed, allowing him to play in upcoming Premiership matches against Ross County and Hearts.
Former Premier League and FIFA-listed referee Keith Hackett welcomed the tribunal’s decision, emphasizing the need for Scottish refereeing head Willie Collum to address the incident with officials.
Hackett stated: “This is the correct decision by the tribunal hearing.
Referees are human and do make errors. It is important for Head of Referees Willie Collum to discuss this with the team of officials to ensure similar incidents in the future are handled appropriately.”
The decision ensures Diomande is now available for manager Philippe Clement in key fixtures, providing a boost for Rangers as they continue their Scottish Premiership campaign.
