Latest Rangers Takeover Twist: 49ers Representative Addresses Red Bull and Leeds United Deal Claims

A deal is reportedly in place with the 49ers Enterprises, the financial arm of the NFL powerhouse, as they prepare for another foray into the world of “soccer.”

A potential dual ownership conflict with Leeds United has surfaced, but there are possible solutions.

However, one option has already been ruled out by a key figure in the Rangers takeover discussions—Paraag Marathe.

The 49ers Enterprises have been linked to a possible sale of their stake in Leeds United to Red Bull, which already holds a significant share in the Championship club.

However, speaking at the Financial Times’ Business of Football Summit—where Marathe is expected to be a highly sought-after figure—the Leeds United chairman dismissed these speculations.

“That’s not contemplated at all. There is no language to that effect. It’s not something we have discussed ever,” Marathe stated regarding a potential sale to Red Bull.

When asked about the Rangers takeover, he remained tight-lipped:

“I can’t really comment on whatever rumours might be out there,” he said.

However, Marathe did confirm that the group is actively exploring new investment opportunities.

“We are looking at other opportunities. It is possible to replicate the passion [of Leeds],” he explained.

“What we are looking for are clubs with the right foundation, a history of success, and potential for growth.

And if you are passionate about sports and treat it as a way of life, as I do, then absolutely, there is enough room in your heart to love all your sports properties—just like you love all your children.”

Would Rangers Become a Feeder Club for Leeds United?

With any multi-club ownership model, it is unlikely that the 49ers Enterprises would seek to maintain multiple teams of equal standing.

Regardless of history or UEFA coefficient rankings, the controlling interest will naturally prioritize financial returns, which are not found in the Scottish Premiership.

While Rangers have an “easier” route to the Champions League, the financial disparity is stark.

For context, despite Celtic’s strong European campaign this season, their earnings from UEFA competitions remain significantly lower than what the last-placed Premier League club receives from TV rights alone.

That said, Rangers would not be relegated to a mere development club for Leeds United.

There would be no obligation for Nils Koppen and his recruitment team to pass up promising players in favor of Leeds.

Moreover, the relationship would not be one-sided. The potential benefits far outweigh the drawbacks, considering Rangers’ current situation and their prospects for the future.
