Yilmaz’s Rangers Exit Nears Completion
It became evident that Ridvan Yilmaz was no longer part of Russell Martin’s plans when his shirt number was reassigned to loan signing Max Aarons.
Negotiations with Besiktas over a transfer fee took some time, but a deal now appears to be imminent, with Yilmaz expected to return to his former club in the coming days.
Former Rangers midfielder Derek Ferguson, speaking exclusively to Ibrox News, shared his candid view on the Turkish defender’s time at Ibrox.
Ferguson Critical of Yilmaz Signing
Yilmaz joined Rangers from Besiktas in the summer of 2022 and has since made 77 appearances across three seasons. However, his stint at Ibrox has been plagued by injuries and inconsistent performances.
Reflecting on the transfer, Ferguson was blunt in his assessment: “It was a mistake bringing him in. He’s never been one of my favourites. There were players in Scottish football at the time who could’ve done just as well.”
He continued, “He was linked with a move back to Turkey within six months of arriving. I don’t know him personally, but he’s someone Rangers need to move on—likely at a financial loss.”
Ferguson concluded, “Rangers will probably accept any reasonable offer for him now. He’s clearly not in Russell Martin’s plans, and the sooner he departs, the better for everyone.”
Streamlining the Squad a Priority for Martin
Martin has been backed with significant transfer funds since taking over and has already added several new faces to the squad.
As a result, Rangers’ squad has become crowded, making it essential to offload players who are surplus to requirements.
