Glasgow Rangers manager Russell Martin has confirmed that the club remain active in the transfer market and are keen to bring in further reinforcements before the summer window closes.
The Ibrox outfit have already been busy in recruitment, with Nasser Djiga, Thelo Aasgaard, Joe Rothwell, Oliver Antman, and Djeidi Gassama among the names who have arrived to bolster the squad.
Yet, despite these additions, Martin – a former Scotland international – has made it clear he still wants more signings to strengthen his options.
This means Rangers fans can expect more developments before the September deadline, as the Light Blues aim to assemble a side capable of seriously challenging for the Scottish Premiership crown.
One key area under focus is the heart of the defence. Even after securing Emmanuel Fernandez and Djiga this summer, the club are still exploring options to add more quality at centre-back.
Rangers target left-sided defensive option
Fresh reports now link the club with a move for Real Betis central defender Nobel Mendy.
According to RangersReview journalist Chris Jack, the 20-year-old is firmly on the club’s radar.
However, a deal is not believed to be ‘imminent,’ suggesting negotiations are still in the early stages despite the club’s interest in securing his signature.
Real Betis are reportedly seeking a fee of around £3.4 million for Mendy, and it remains uncertain whether Rangers are prepared to meet that valuation.
Why Mendy fits the profile
The Gers could benefit from adding a player of Mendy’s profile, particularly if Ben Davies and Clinton Nsiala – both absent from recent matchday squads – depart before the deadline.
Losing Ridvan Yilmaz would also leave Jefte as the only natural left-footed left-back in the team, creating an additional gap.
A versatile defender who can operate both as a centre-back and at left-back would therefore be ideal.
Calvin Bassey previously filled that dual role to great effect, joining from Leicester City as a youngster and breaking through under Giovanni van Bronckhorst in the 2021/22 season, alternating seamlessly between the two positions.
Mendy, described by journalist Kai Watson as “strong and powerful,” matches that mould. Standing at 6ft 2in, the left-footer has the physical attributes to thrive in the Scottish game and the flexibility to cover both defensive roles.
His senior experience is still limited – just six matches for Real Betis, including two LaLiga appearances last season in which he impressively won 100% of his duels.
While that small sample size makes it difficult to fully assess his quality at the top level, Rangers’ interest suggests their scouting department has seen enough promise in his performances for Betis’ youth sides and senior outings to justify the investment.
If signed, Mendy could potentially become “Bassey 2.0” – a young, athletic, and versatile defender who strengthens two positions at once.
Such a signing would give Martin the option to rotate his defensive shape without having to recruit separate players for each role.
With the clock ticking towards the close of the transfer window, Mendy’s situation will be one to watch as Rangers push to complete a squad capable of competing on multiple fronts this season.
