Charles tipped as Butland’s long-term successor

Jack Butland has started the 2025/26 campaign in superb form, delivering a series of outstanding displays in Europe.

His performances make it likely that he will retain the number one spot for the rest of the season.

However, Rangers view Charles as an ideal long-term successor. The young shot-stopper broke into the Sheffield Wednesday first team at the tail end of the 2024/25 season, earning the number one jersey in the process.

He made eight league appearances last term and, should he remain at Hillsborough this season, it could prove to be his breakout year.

At just 20 years old, Charles already shows significant promise. His pedigree from the Manchester City academy, combined with his growing experience in the Championship, makes him a highly attractive prospect.

While the £8million price tag may appear excessive given Wednesday’s plight, Rangers believe that in time, Charles could seamlessly replace the rejuvenated Butland between the sticks.
