Kevin Thelwell has quickly come under fire for several questionable transfer dealings at Rangers, with many fans and pundits openly criticising both the fees paid and the overall profiles of the players brought into the squad.

This scrutiny has intensified following a dreadful start to the campaign, which has also placed manager Russell Martin under pressure, with sections of the support already calling for his dismissal.

Thelwell only took up the role of Rangers sporting director in April, yet there are already growing demands from supporters that he should be relieved of his duties.

The discontent stems largely from the club’s summer business, with one particular signing already being labelled as an expensive mistake.

Emmanuel Fernandez branded a flop at Ibrox

Emmanuel Fernandez arrived from Peterborough United in the summer for a fee of £3.5m, a significant outlay by Scottish football standards.

However, the 22-year-old defender has so far failed to make any meaningful impact at Ibrox.

Speaking on The Rangers Review podcast on 25 September, journalists Derek Clark and Jonny McFarlane expressed serious concerns about the logic behind the transfer. Clark described the signing as “strange,” admitting that he was stunned when it was announced.

He added that even Peterborough supporters were taken aback by the money Rangers were prepared to spend.

McFarlane echoed these sentiments, stating that the reaction among Posh fans was a mixture of “shock, dismay, and delight.”

He underlined that spending £3.5m in Scottish football should guarantee a player capable of contributing immediately to the squad, something Fernandez has not managed to do.

Fernandez had only recently broken into Peterborough’s first team, making 42 appearances last season before earning his surprise move to Ibrox. Since joining Rangers, however, he has made just two appearances.

Although he scored in the 4-2 Premier Sports Cup victory over Alloa Athletic, he has been omitted from the matchday squads in the last two league fixtures against Hearts and Hibernian.

His only Premiership outing came in the 1-1 draw with St. Mirren, where he started purely due to Nasser Djiga’s suspension.

For most leagues across the world, apart from the Premier League, splashing £3.5m on a player who does not feature regularly is widely regarded as reckless.

Indeed, aside from Celtic, no other Scottish club has ever paid such a fee for a single player.

As a result, the Fernandez signing is viewed as a glaring misstep and another dent in Thelwell’s short tenure at Rangers.

Other questionable decisions

Fernandez is not the only signing raising eyebrows. The £8m arrival of Youssef Chermiti from Everton has also been heavily criticised.

The Portuguese striker failed to score during his time at Goodison Park, and despite the hefty fee, he has yet to start for Rangers, with Bojan Miovski preferred as Martin’s lone striker.

Thelwell, who sanctioned Chermiti’s transfer to Everton in his previous role, is now being questioned for repeating that gamble at Ibrox.

Unless his expensive recruits prove their worth soon, he may be forced to take responsibility for what many already consider failed investments.

The months ahead will be decisive for Thelwell. If his signings continue to falter, his position could become untenable, with fans already sceptical of his impact since arriving at the club.
