Tottenham Given Green Light on Discounted Serie A Deal – But Face Stiff Competition from London Rival
In recent weeks, several reports have suggested that Tottenham Hotspur are likely to target a new left-back this summer to provide competition for Destiny Udogie, especially with Ben Davies’ contract set to expire next month.
Spurs are now believed to be eyeing a move for an experienced and versatile Serie A defender, whose profile closely mirrors that of the departing Welshman.
Initial reports from a few days ago indicated that Tottenham had identified Napoli’s Mathias Olivera as a potential target.
The Uruguayan international is also reportedly attracting interest from Atletico Madrid.
A fresh update has now shed more light on the North London club’s interest in Olivera, stating that Tottenham will have to fend off competition from two other Premier League clubs in the race to land the 27-year-old.
According to the latest edition of AS, as relayed by Sport Witness, Olivera is expected to depart Napoli this summer, with several clubs circling.
The report notes that Atletico Madrid have placed the defender on their list of potential signings to reinforce their defense.
It is also noted that Olivera is seen as a more economical choice compared to other left-back options on Atletico’s radar.
Napoli are reportedly willing to sell the defender for around €30 million (approximately £25.2 million), which could prove to be a bargain for interested suitors.
However, the La Liga side are not the only club vying for his signature. Tottenham face stiff competition from West Ham United and Brighton & Hove Albion, both of whom are said to be closely monitoring Olivera’s situation.
The AS report names Tottenham, West Ham, and Brighton as the three Premier League clubs most keen on signing the full-back, with all three sides having reportedly made inquiries regarding a potential deal.
Interestingly, the publication adds that Napoli had been working to secure Olivera on a new contract as recently as two months ago.
However, the Serie A outfit have now shifted their stance and are open to listening to offers for the defender in the upcoming transfer window.
