“Impressive” – BBC pundit reconsiders opinion on £55m Tottenham star after “giving him some criticism”

Troy Deeney has praised Tottenham striker Dominic Solanke following his impressive two-goal performance against Aston Villa on Sunday afternoon.
Before the Villa game, Solanke had only scored twice in his first seven Premier League games for Spurs, and the pressure was beginning to mount on the number nine.
However, he rose to the occasion against Unai Emery’s side, first lifting the ball delicately over Emi Martinez for his opening goal, then converting from a Richarlison cut-back to secure his brace.
Tottenham, led by Ange Postecoglou, ultimately won 4-1, moving them up to seventh in the league, just three points behind Nottingham Forest in third.
Solanke’s efforts earned him a spot in Deeney’s team of the week.
The former Watford striker admitted he had previously been skeptical about Solanke’s ability to lead the Spurs’ front line, but this performance encouraged him that Solanke may be able to take the team to new heights.
Deeney Praises Solanke
Tottenham signed Solanke this summer for £55 million after he scored 21 goals in all competitions for Bournemouth last season.
The move, considered a “gamble” by some due to the high transfer fee, has seen Solanke face challenges in adapting to North London.
However, his strong display on Sunday at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium should help quiet some critics, as he positioned himself effectively to drive Spurs forward in the match.
One such critic, Troy Deeney, commended Solanke’s efforts and included him in his BBC team of the week.
“I have been giving him a bit of stick because I’m not sure if he’s the man to score enough goals to take Tottenham to where they want to be, but he was really good in the win over Villa.
When I critique players, I also like to give them credit where it’s due.
His goals were two classic poacher’s finishes.
He played off the last defender, didn’t drop back too much, and was always available for a cross.
He got his rewards for that positioning. Hopefully, he can continue in this form and help Tottenham reach their goals.”
