Premiership chairman confirms Rangers in talks for transfer of ‘fantastic’ young talent.

Lewis Ferguson recently discussed his uncle Barry Ferguson in comments that underscored Rangers’ missed opportunity to sign the former Aberdeen midfielder before his move to Bologna.

It’s a reminder of past transfer regrets, as Ferguson isn’t the only one who slipped through the cracks — Josh Doig, another talented Scot, was also linked with Rangers before he opted for a switch to Italy.

Since arriving at Ibrox, technical director Nils Koppen has made a clear commitment to avoiding such oversights.

One of his top priorities in a 14-point transfer strategy was the recruitment of top young Scottish talent.

He has also pledged that Rangers will sign at least one homegrown player each season.

Koppen has so far upheld that promise, and now it appears that Rangers are moving forward with efforts to secure one of the Scottish Premiership’s most promising young players.

A rival chairman has now confirmed early-stage discussions with Rangers.

Rangers are reportedly in transfer talks with Dundee over midfielder Lyall Cameron, a key performer for the Dens Park side this season.

Historically, relations between the two clubs haven’t always been smooth — notably during the Covid-era title controversy, which saw Dundee’s delayed vote help Celtic secure the championship, causing friction with Rangers.

Nonetheless, Dundee’s American chairman, John Nelms, recently confirmed preliminary conversations with Rangers CEO James Bisgrove regarding Cameron’s potential move.

Rangers secured a pre-contract agreement for the 22-year-old in January, but a development fee will still be due to Dundee when he officially joins the Ibrox side this summer.

Cameron has been a standout this campaign, with Dundee manager Tony Docherty praising him as “fantastic.”

The young midfielder has contributed 10 goals and 8 assists, playing a vital role in Dundee’s competitive run.

Should the two clubs fail to agree on a development fee, the matter would be settled by a tribunal — something both sides are keen to avoid.

“There has been a small conversation, a very, very preliminary conversation,” said Nelms in a report via the Daily Record.

He added that both parties are actively working toward a solution to bypass the tribunal process.

Nelms referenced the previous situation involving Connor Barron, who left Aberdeen for Rangers after his contract expired.

That case ended up in a tribunal, where Rangers were ordered to pay £639,920 plus £250,000 in add-ons and a sell-on clause.

The public nature of that dispute — especially with Aberdeen CEO Alan Burrows vocal throughout — is something both Dundee and Rangers want to avoid.

Nelms acknowledged that Dundee’s status as a club without an “elite academy” means the development fee for Cameron wouldn’t reach the same levels as Barron’s.

Still, he noted, “I don’t think they want to go to a tribunal.

The last tribunal was very well publicised, and our lawyers know all the details. So we both probably have different views, but neither of us wants to get there.”

In addition to Cameron, Dundee’s Josh Mulligan is also attracting interest from Rangers, with the youngster earning praise from pundits for his recent performances.
