According to former Manchester United chief scout and long-time Sir Alex Ferguson assistant Mick Brown, Russell Martin is planning a major shift in Rangers’ transfer strategy.

In an exclusive interview with Football Insider, Brown—who remains closely connected within the football world—revealed that Martin will avoid signing ageing, high-profile players, opting instead to focus on recruiting and developing younger talents.

Martin’s approach aligns with Rangers’ current philosophy of long-term development. He aims to bring in promising youngsters who can grow into first-team regulars, rather than short-term big-name signings who may only offer one or two years of service.

This change comes as the Ibrox side looks to rebuild its squad under new leadership.

Brown previously shared that Rangers had been actively pursuing Peterborough United star Kwame Poku.

However, despite their interest, Poku is now set to join Queens Park Rangers, having agreed terms and undergone a medical, as Football Insider exclusively reported on Tuesday.

To accommodate incoming signings, Martin plans to offload some of the club’s older and fringe players.

On June 22, Brown confirmed that Rangers are open to offers for long-time right-back James Tavernier, particularly following the signing of Max Aarons in that position.

Despite the focus on youth, Rangers still recognise the value of experience. As Football Insider reported, the club retains interest in Leicester City’s seasoned defender Conor Coady.

However, Brown, who spent over a decade overseeing top-level recruitment at Manchester United during their dominant years, made it clear that the main focus this summer is on acquiring younger players at reasonable prices.

“Russell Martin and the new owners are putting new plans into action,” Brown told Football Insider.

“Historically, Rangers looked to bring in ageing Premier League names, hoping their reputations would raise the club’s profile. Paul Gascoigne comes to mind—his presence attracted others.

But the club is in a different place now. They don’t want players on massive wages who’ll only stick around for a couple of years.

“They want younger players they can develop into stars. These players could either be sold on for a profit or become top-quality assets for the team.

Martin is committed to that model. While experience and leadership are still important, the priority is now youth and value.”

In line with this revised strategy, Rangers have expressed interest in signing Liverpool left-back Owen Beck on loan.

The 22-year-old is set to extend his stay at Anfield, with Football Insider revealing on June 26 that Liverpool have opened contract negotiations to secure him on a long-term deal.

Once renewed, Beck is expected to head out on loan following the arrival of Milos Kerkez and questions over Andy Robertson’s future.

Rangers are one of several clubs eyeing a short-term move for Beck, though they will have to compete with Derby County and Wrexham for his signature.
