David Weir, who concluded his playing career at Ibrox, has spent the past six years working behind the scenes with a Premier League club.
The 54-year-old is in high demand, having recently been linked as Everton’s top target for a similar role.
Rangers Seeking a New Sporting Director
Earlier this month, chief executive Patrick Stewart confirmed that Rangers are actively searching for a new sporting director.
This move would allow Nils Koppen to focus exclusively on player recruitment.
Weir has extensive experience in that area from his time at Brighton, making him a natural candidate.
His deep-rooted connection to Ibrox further strengthens the speculation.
However, with Everton and several other Premier League clubs also showing interest, securing Weir would be a significant coup for Rangers.
With 49ers Enterprises edging closer to a takeover at Ibrox, Derek Ferguson—brother of current manager Barry Ferguson—believes Rangers should aim high in their appointment.
“The standout name for this role is David Weir,” Ferguson told Ibrox News.
“He’s done a fantastic job at Brighton and is immediately one of the first names that comes to mind.
“The club is making the right decision by appointing a sporting director. Koppen was technical director, but he’s been juggling too many responsibilities.”
49ers’ Financial Strength Could Boost Rangers’ Search
Many believe Rangers’ delay in parting ways with Philippe Clement was due to financial constraints.
However, once news emerged of the 49ers’ takeover bid, Clement’s departure quickly followed.
Their financial resources could now play a key role in securing a top-tier candidate for the sporting director position.
“It all comes down to finances,” Ferguson added. “Rangers haven’t been in a position to bring in a sporting director.
“But with money coming into the club, the chief executive can ease the burden on Koppen, allowing him to focus on recruitment.
“This is a positive step for Rangers. My top choice would be David Weir, but would he return? If the 49ers complete the takeover, anything is possible. If there’s a will, there’s a way.”
