Rangers boss Russell Martin has endured a turbulent start to life at Ibrox, with his team collecting only seven points from their opening six Premiership fixtures and suffering consecutive defeats in their Europa League group campaign.
With growing unrest among supporters after a poor opening few months, speculation is mounting that Rangers could turn back to Steven Gerrard — the man who famously ended their decade-long title drought in the 2020/21 season.
Gerrard, who has been out of management since departing Saudi Pro League side Al-Ettifaq in January, could be on the verge of a return to Glasgow.
According to the Daily Record, Rangers and Gerrard have already held discussions twice, with talks involving 49ers Enterprises — the club’s American ownership group — amid mounting pressure on Martin.
Rangers in Contact with Gerrard
It is understood that Gerrard was among the leading candidates for the Rangers job before Martin’s appointment in June, alongside former Real Madrid assistant Davide Ancelotti.
However, the ex-Liverpool captain’s representatives reportedly informed the club that he was not ready to relocate his family back to the UK from the Middle East at that stage, prompting him to withdraw from the process.
This was not the first time Gerrard had been in dialogue with 49ers Enterprises. Leeds United coach Stewart Downing recently confirmed that the same ownership group had also considered Gerrard for the Elland Road position before Daniel Farke was chosen:
“I know they definitely did speak to him before Farke got the job. It was him, Scott Parker, and Farke.
Farke got it based on his promotion experience, which has proved the right call. He’s done a good job there.”
Gerrard first took charge of Rangers in July 2018 and enjoyed a successful spell, winning 124 of his 192 matches with an impressive 2.15 points-per-game average.
He led the club to their first Premiership crown in a decade in 2020/21, finishing the season unbeaten in the league, before leaving for Aston Villa in November 2021 while Rangers sat top of the table.
His time at Villa Park began positively, but after guiding the team to a 14th-place finish, his second season unravelled.
Gerrard was dismissed just 11 games into the 2022/23 campaign after winning only three matches, ending a difficult Premier League stint.
